How this is calculated
- 1
Cross-section area
Plate: thickness times width. Round bar: π × d² / 4. Pipe: the outer circle minus the inner one. Angle: thickness × (leg A + leg B, minus thickness).
- 2
Volume and density
Area times length gives the volume, multiplied by the material density: 7.85 g/cm³ for mild steel, 7.93 for SS 304, 7.98 for SS 316, 2.70 for aluminium, 8.5 for brass and 1.19 for acrylic.
- 3
Kilograms, maunds and cost
Weight in kg is divided by 40 for maunds, the market maund used across Pakistan. Cost is the weight times the rate per kg you enter.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a 4 × 8 MS sheet weigh?
A 1220 × 2440 mm mild steel sheet weighs about 23.4 kg per mm of thickness: around 47 kg at 2 mm, 70 kg at 3 mm and 117 kg at 5 mm.
Why is the real weight different from the calculator?
The calculator uses nominal sizes. Mill tolerance, rolled edges and coatings can make real stock 2 to 5% heavier or lighter. Angle iron also has a rounded root that adds a little weight.
How many kg is one maund?
In Pakistani markets one maund (mann, من) is 40 kg. The older colonial maund of 37.3 kg is no longer used in trade.
Are the PKR rates current?
They are indicative starting values. Steel, stainless and aluminium prices move weekly with scrap and import costs, so enter your supplier's rate for an accurate figure.
